The Merseyside Nighthawks faced a tough challenge on the road this past weekend as they travelled to the unbeaten Tamworth Phoenix. Having already lost to the Phoenix at home, the Nighthawks knew they would be up against it as they faced the reigning Britbowl champions in their own back yard.

Merseyside received the ball to start the game and managed to pick up some first downs through some tough running from running back Martin Murphy with Alex Eager providing a change of pace splitting time in the backfield and at wide receiver once again. Tamworth managed to stop the ‘Hawks offence around midfield however and a botched snap on the following punt play set the Phoenix up with a short field as they moved the ball into the end zone for their first touchdown of the day.

Things didn’t get much better for Merseyside as the game went on with their offence unable to stay on the field for very long and their defence struggling to slow down a very well drilled Tamworth team. The Phoenix continued to extend their lead as the game progressed, displaying the kind of form that saw them complete an unbeaten season last year on the way to the Britbowl title.

For the Nighthawks it served as a stark reminder that there is still plenty of work to be done as they fell to a 62-0 defeat on the day, dropping them to 1-4 on the season in what is proving to be one of the more trying periods in recent ‘Hawks history. The team have little time to reflect on the loss however as they travel to face the Edinburgh Wolves (3-2) next Saturday in what could be a crucial game for both sides.
