This past weekend saw the Nighthawks take a back seat, as the GB Lions headed to Finland for the IFAF European Championships. Merseyside had two players involved, with WR duo Harry Routledge and Alex Eager packing their bags and heading to Helsinki with the team.
In a game where the Lions went into the game as big underdogs, they kept pace with the Fins in the 1st
quarter, after a pick 6 from London Warriors DB Joshua Amis tied the game up at 7-7. However, the big offensive line of the Finnish squad, coupled with some strong running from their RBs, meant the home team went into half time holding a 28-7 lead over the Lions.
The second half was much better defensively, but the GB team couldn’t find their groove offensively. Routledge had some good catches, one right down the middle that he took for close to 20 yards being the highlight of the bunch. The Lions found themselves in the Finnish red zone a number of times, but chasing the game, unfortunately couldn’t convert.
It could easily be said that the Brits were outplayed, but they held their own against a highly developed semi-pro set up in the Fins, and can certainly go into Tuesday’s game against France (kick off 18:00 BST) with their heads held high.
