After their victory over Leicester Falcons last weekend, the Nighthawks schedule doesn’t get any easier, with a tough trip to Tamworth on the cards for the Merseyside outfit this weekend.
Tamworth are riding high in the Premiership North, with 3 consecutive unbeaten regular seasons, and you have to go back to August 2015 for their last loss in this division, which was a 21-14 reverse vs East Kilbride Pirates. Since then, Jason Scott’s outfit have gone 31-0 in the regular season, conceding an average of just over 7 points per game. Add this stat to the of nearly 50 points per game (1,546 over the last 31 games) and you can see why Tamworth have been dominating the league for so long.
Tamworth are currently 1-0 in the North, having opened their season with a 28-6 victory over Sheffield Giants in week 2. At face value, this would appear that the Phoenix had lost a step this off season, but in reality it’s down to adjustments they have made following the loss of starting QB Pat Daley. Daley left in the off-season to join the Hannover Spartans and Tamworth have started life without him in a perfect way.
The Nighthawks certainly have their work cut out for them this weekend, having been on the wrong end of 6 straight defeats against Tamworth in their 3 seasons in the Premiership North, but Head Coach Craig Pennington is confident that there is certainly reasons to be cheerful, particularly after blowing away the rust following Sunday’s season opening-win. The Nighthawks must score points to keep pace with Tamworth throughout the game, and their defence must shut down the Phoenix’s prolific offence where it can.
Players to Watch
#5 Running Back Elliot Walters – a quick back who can find a hole where there isn’t one, and who has tormented the Nighthawks defence the last few seasons
#81 WR James Hossack – a tough wide receiver to cover who started the season off with a score at Sheffield
#90 Wayne Drew – co-founder of mental health support program Lifting The Lid, Wayne is a fast defensive end that has caused our Offensive Line many a problem over the last few years
The game kicks off at 4pm at Pack Meadow on Sunday. You can find out more details here :- https://www.facebook.com/events/642600349521091
