The Merseyside Nighthawks (3-5) head into the penultimate game of their 2018 season this weekend as they take on the East Kilbride Pirates (0-8). The Nighthawks are currently on a 2 game winning streak but can’t afford to get complacent against a Pirates side looking for their first win of the season.
Merseyside put in another strong defensive display in last week’s game against the Edinburgh Wolves as they came away with a tense 14-10 victory. Cornerback Jonny Weekes continued his impressive inaugural season on Merseyside as he grabbed a late interception that clinched the game. He wasn’t the only defensive back to have a good game though.Safety Harry Routledge starred once again in his new position having recently made the switch from wide receiver. Offensively, Merseyside may only have put up 14 points last week, but were unlucky not to add more with two missed field goals and a number of other opportunities in the redzone. If they can improve upon this as the weekend then they should have plenty of chances to put points up as long the ‘Hawks defence keeps getting them the ball back.
East Kilbride may only be playing for pride at this point as they set to be relegated to Division 1 but they will be looking to get at least one W on the board before the season ends. While the Scottish side have been a top tier mainstay in recent years their excellent set up on and off the field should see them come back stronger after they rebuild their senior side in the middle tier of British American football.
Kick off this weekend is at 2:30pm on Sunday the 22nd of July at the JMO Sports Park in Skelmersdale (WN8 8BX) and entry is free to all.
