Raptors shut out MudDogs, move to 1-1 for the year

The Liverpool Raptors this weekend posted a big shut out win of the Bangor Muddogs, in their first home game of the year at JMO Sports Park.

The day started well for the Raptors, rushing out to a quick lead, with 2 TDs in the opening 5 minutes. Firstly, QB Chris Marshall kept the ball and ran it in himself from short yardage, to put the Raptors up by 6. The XP was good and the 7-0 scoreline didn’t last for long. The Raptors D got the ball back for the offence quickly, and RB Jimmy Sutherland was on hand to run the ball in. The XP was blocked, and the Raptors had a comfortable 13-0 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

There was a lot of back and forth in the 2nd, as the Muddogs offence drove the ball downfield, only to turn the ball over. The Raptors did much the same, handing the ball back to Bangor via an interception on the half way line. The Raptors D proved to be more than a match for the Muddogs and forced them into a 3 and out to get the ball back for Liverpool. This time QB Marshall steadied the ship and drove the home team downfield, before capping the drive off with his second TD of the day. The 2 pt conversion was good, and the Raptors looked to be heading into half time with a 21-0 lead.

Bangor hadn’t read the script and tried to get some points on the board before half time, before the Raptors D held firm and forced another 3 and out. This time, the punt was blocked by an untouched Defensive Lineman, and the Bangor punter downed the ball on his own 2 yard line. The Raptors offence came back onto the field and RB Sutherland scored his 2nd TD of the day on the ground before time expired in the half. The PAT was blocked and a 27-0 half time score did not flatter the dominant Raptors.

The second half kicked off and there was a few exchanges of 3 and outs before the Raptors scored their fifth TD of the day. Sutherland did what he does best and ran the ball into the end zone untouched for a 33-0 lead. The Raptors went for 2, to try and enforce the running clock, but ultimately fell just short as the pass was batted down. This ended the scoring for the 3rd quarter and into the 4th we headed.

The 4th quarter was relatively dull compared to the previous 3, before the Raptors D stepped up and lit the game up. A punt was downed on the Muddogs 3 yard line and on the very next play, the Defence forced a safety in the end zone, bringing the score to 35-0. This proved to be a catalyst for more points, as Raptors returner Sutherland handed the ball off to fellow returner Alex Totir, who then reversed the field and took it down the Raptors sideline, evading a number of Muddogs defenders for 6. The XP was missed, and the 41-0 scoreline would remain until the end of the game to give the Raptors a commanding win.

The Raptors now have a week off to refresh, before making the relatively short trip to Edge Hill Vikings on December 2nd.
