The Merseyside Nighthawks (0-1) will play their first home game of the season this weekend as they host the Tamworth Phoenix (1-0) this Sunday.

The 2018 season didn’t start as well as the Nighthawks would have liked, as they lost on the road last weekend to the newly promoted Manchester Titans in a closely fought matchup. Key for Merseyside this weekend will be improving their execution in all phases of the game if they hope to take anything from the reigning Britbowl champions, the Phoenix. Unbeaten in Britain since 2016, Tamworth have been playing in Europe this season and while they lost their opening two fixtures against the Copenhagen Towers and Carlstad Crusaders, they have competed well against some of the best Europe has to offer but will be looking to get back to winning ways against Merseyside.

The ‘Hawks will be looking for more stellar performances from last week’s MVPs linebacker Mark Houghton and wide receiver Liam Holebrook, and will need the rest of the squad to step up to their level. Promising for the Nighthawks last weekend were the performances of some new additions to the squad. Cornerback Jonny Weekes grabbed his first interception for the club and running back Martin Murphy scored his first touchdown as a ‘Hawk. Another new running back, Jace Waugh Cascoe, picked up the special teams MVP award after some impressive kick returns and these three all seem to have promising careers lined up with Merseyside.

The Nighthawks and Phoenix have been the top two teams in the Premier North for the last two years and this weekend’s game is important for both clubs. The game will take place at the JMO Sports Park in Skelmersdale (WN8 8BX) and kick off is 3pm this Sunday 20th May. You can also catch our U19’s team playing before our game, when they play host to the Chester Romans. The kick off for the U19s will be 11am. Entry to both games is free, and JMO Sports Park has a fully licenced bar, with live sports showing in the Clubhouse.
